Attendance
Attendance
At Chief Joseph Elementary attendance is extremely important. Research shows that regular attendance has a direct correlation to a child’s academic success. Students need to be in class every day to benefit from the teacher’s instruction, the interaction with peers and the exchange of ideas that leads to a more in-depth understanding of content.
Student Attendance Policy:
Oregon law requires parents/guardians to see that children between the ages of 7 and 18 years old attend school regularly. It is the legal responsibility of the parent to have their children in school and ensure the student attends school regularly and in a timely manner (Reference: ORS 339.010-339.020). This responsibility lies with the student as well, because students are expected to attend all classes to the best of their ability, both daily and on time.
Reporting an AbsenceThere are 3 ways to report an absence:
- Log into ParentVUE and report the absence (only full day absence’s can be recorded). Note regarding absence, can be added.
- Call the office 503-916-6255 and select #1 for the attendance line. Leave a voicemail with the following information: Date(s), Student Name, Teacher & reason for absence. Office staff regularly check this line throughout the day.
- Email Office staff and cc teacher to report absence. Teachers are not able to input attendance other than absent or tardy, so keeping office staff informed is important.
If the school office has not received a notification of your student's absence before 9:00 am of the day's absence, you will receive an automated call from PPS alerting you that your student is not in school. Please contact the school as soon as possible to report the absence.
Dismissal Changes
It is important for your student's safety and to ensure a smooth end of day dismissal process, to remain consistent with your dismissal routine. However, we understand emergencies and situations do arise.
Should you need to make a change to your child's dismissal plan, either for a specific day or permanent ongoing change, please email your classroom teacher and the CJES Office with details 24 hours in advance of the change.
Emergency changes and Day Of changes must go through the CJES Office.
● Please email your classroom teacher and the CJES office with details 24 hours in advance of the change
● Notify your after school provider directly if you have one (Neighborhood House)
Mid Day Check in/Out
If your student is arriving late/leaving early:
- Email your child’s teacher in advance if possible and CC the CJES office staff.
- Upon arrival, parent/guardian will come to the main office to sign in/out your child.
- If leaving early, office staff will call students to meet the parent/guardian in the office. We can not call students down before a parent/guardian arrives.
10-Day Withdrawal Process
Any absences (excused or unexcused) exceeding 10 consecutive school days require schools to withdraw students and remove them from enrollment; per State of Oregon Compulsory Attendance
statues ORS 339.010. To re-enroll, families will need to contact the office.
